Life Changes. Your Coverage Should Keep Up.

Do You Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?

Life changes, both planned and unexpected, can impact your Wisconsin health insurance coverage and Medicare plan. Events like marriage, divorce, having a baby, job loss, retirement, or income changes may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) under ACA Market Place health insurance guidelinesalso known as Obamacare - and Medicare rules.

A SEP allows you to enroll in or change health insurance plans outside of Open Enrollment. However, most qualifying life events come with a limited window—typically 60 days—to act.

Common Qualifying Life Events for a Special Enrollment Period

  • Marriage or divorce

  • Birth or adoption of a child

  • Job change or loss of employer-sponsored health insurance

  • Household income changes

  • Moving within Wisconsin

  • Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan

  • Losing BadgerCare

  • Retirement or becoming self-employed

If you miss this window, you may be forced to wait until the next Open Enrollment period.
