Cybersecurity: Why We Should All Be Paying Attention

Hardly a week goes by without news of another cyberattack. Hospitals, school systems, credit card processors, cell phone providers, hotel chains, retailers, social media platforms, and even government agencies have all fallen victim to data breaches.

With so many attacks occurring across nearly every industry, an important question emerges: How likely is it that your personal information has already been exposed?

The truth is that no one can calculate the exact percentage of people affected by data breaches. The same individual may appear in multiple breaches, many incidents go unreported, and exposed records do not always equal unique people. However, cybersecurity researchers agree on one thing: the number is surprisingly high.

Current estimates suggest that between 70% and 90% of global internet users have had at least one piece of personal information exposed at some point. That could mean anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 billion people worldwide. In the United States, experts estimate that as many as 85% to 95% of adults have had some form of personal data compromised.

If you use email, own a cell phone, have a credit card, receive healthcare services, attended school, use social media, or have ever paid a utility bill, the chances are high that some of your information has been exposed somewhere.

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue—it's a personal responsibility. Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, regular monitoring of accounts, and healthy skepticism toward suspicious emails and messages are no longer optional. In today's digital world, it is safer to assume that at least some of your information has already been exposed and to take steps to protect yourself accordingly.

The question is no longer whether cyberattacks matter. The question is whether we are paying enough attention.
